When five-year-old Lucy Oshman visited the Seed Bank at the 91短视频 for Plant Conservation Science and Action, she couldn鈥檛 wait to start growing her own plants at home. 鈥淔lowers and tomatoes,鈥 she said proudly when asked what she loves most about the Garden. Even at a young age, Lucy is already discovering what her mother, Jacqlyn, treasures too: connecting with nature in the heart of a bustling city.
For Jacqlyn, that connection runs deep.
鈥淚 grew up gardening and loving the outdoors,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hen we moved to Chicago, the Garden became this beautiful place where I could pass on that love to my kids.鈥
Whether she鈥檚 visiting with her two daughters to explore the Model Railroad Garden or finding a quiet moment to read in the Helen and Richard Thomas English Walled Garden, it鈥檚 a place she returns to again and again.
As a former teacher, Jacqlyn is always looking for meaningful ways to give back鈥攁nd hopes to instill that same spirit in her children.
鈥淭he Garden reflects so many things I care about鈥 sustainability and conservation, education, and getting kids involved in
nature,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t just felt like a natural place for our family to support.鈥
That purpose deepened when Jacqlyn began volunteering at Windy City Harvest鈥檚 Farm on Ogden鈥攆ollowing in the footsteps of her mother, who is also a Garden volunteer.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 realize at first that it was part of the Garden,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut once I saw how far the work really goes鈥攑roviding goods and services beyond the North Shore, and throughout all of Chicago 鈥擨 wanted to be part of it.鈥
For David, Jacqlyn, Lucy, and Logan Oshman, the Garden is a place where their family鈥檚 values take root鈥攆rom making memories together to helping nurture plants and people beyond its bounds.
鈥淚鈥檓 really nervous about where the world is going with climate change,鈥 Jacqlyn said. 鈥淏ut places like this鈥攚here learning, nature, and community all come together鈥 make me feel like we鈥檙e planting seeds for a better future.鈥
Donors like the Oshmans help cultivate curiosity, connection, and care for the natural world and each other. Every gift鈥攐f time, tribute, or support鈥攎akes a difference.
